A brief history

The use of cannabis was believed to originate in Central Asia. Its documentation dates back to 2800BC. In 1841, Irish physician Sir William O’Shaughnessy introduced cannabis to Western medicine. Following this, cannabis was used as medicine and made into tinctures, pills and other products. By the early 20th century, cannabis became illegal in many parts of the world and has only recently become legalised in many countries for medicinal use.

What is it?

Medicinal cannabis derives from cannabis plants. The two major ingredients responsible for its therapeutic effects are THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol). THC is the main psychoactive ingredient of cannabis responsible for the ‘high’ that may be experienced. THC is used in the treatment of pain, nausea and vomiting, muscle spasticity and may aid in sleep and improving appetite. CBD is the non-intoxicating ingredient of cannabis and may aid in the treatment of anxiety, seizures and pain.

Legality

As of 2016, the Australian Federal Government legalised the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal and research purposes in Australia. This allows medical grade cannabis to be produced and manufactured into medicinal products that can be accessed with prescriptions.
